Gabriel O. Mooney, MD DABPLS, FACS, age 77, peacefully passed away at his home after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Catherine {née Hickey}, originally from Gneeveguilla, Co. Kerry, Ireland, for 50 years. Gabriel was a loving father to David and Anita [Dane] Robinson and a doting Papa to Molly, Quinn, and Declan Robinson, as well as their labradoodle Arlie.
Gabriel was raised on a farm in Skryne, Co Meath, Ireland. He cherished sharing stories about his youth, family, the farm, and Irish Football. After completing secondary school, he graduated from Medical School at University College Dublin in 1970. Seeking further education, he emigrated to the United States in 1971 and completed residencies in General and Plastic Surgery, as well as a Hand Surgery Fellowship. Throughout his career, he worked in private practice, primarily at Advocate Christ Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital in the Chicagoland Area, for over 25 years. He held various leadership positions, including Vice-Chairman of the Dept of Surgery, Chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery, and Assistant Professor and Clinical Instructor in Plastic Surgery at prestigious medical institutions. He was also an active member of professional societies and volunteered on surgical missions and clinics, demonstrating his passion for serving others. Gabriel was a Diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was known for his gentle bedside manner.
Gabriel had a wide range of interests, including sports, particularly handball and golf, flying small planes, scuba diving, and telling jokes. He was a man of deep faith and actively involved in his Catholic community. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, who were fortunate to have him actively engaged in their lives. Gabriel was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Gabriel is predeceased by his parents Tommy and Bernadette Mooney, as well as his brothers Ray and Tex [Ann]. He is survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
A visitation will be held at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Hinsdale on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 9 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am. Those unable to attend in person can participate in the live-streamed Mass via https://sij.net/special-event-livestream.
